Basilica Papale Santa Maria Maggiore

This church was erected in the 5th century. At the top center of the church reads “XYSTVS” and “episcopvsplevidei.” The Episcobals Bishop was the bishop for the people, before they were referred to as popes. This church was the first church donated to the Virgin Mary with representation of the cathedral above the bishop at the center of the church. The frescos on the walls were similar to comic strips; they told a story of the story of Jesus. The church has lavish gold ceilings, as many churches dedicated to Mary have. The church serves to hold special private masses of the Catholic faith. The Bernini family showed their homage at this Church. During the Baroque era, Bernini was one of the most important artists of this time period. He also aided in the construction of St. Peter’s square.
